Q&A with Carla Battaglia

15 September, 2017

How would you describe your approach?

I listen and ask questions. I tailor each conversation to the patient. Each case is different, with many factors potentially affecting the overall goal. My aim is to help each patient develop a lifestyle that is sustainable and flexible so they can maintain a good relationship with food for the rest of their life.

I develop small, realistic goals with each patient, and remind them that it doesn’t matter if we stay on the one goal for a few sessions. I congratulate them on always taking that first step in seeking some nutrition support, and not feeling defeated.

What inspired you to become an Accredited Practicing Dietitian?

My interest in food. My love of cooking. My desire to listen and help each person understand their bodies and develop a positive relationship with food, and to provide basic nutritional education.

Have you always been passionate about food?

Yes, always! I find so much joy in being able to create a meal, and in finding multiple uses for ingredients in different recipes. Also, paying this information forward and inspiring others!

What hobbies or activities do you enjoy?

  • Playing basketball

  • Studying the Italian language and culture

  • Cooking

What motivates you to get out of bed every morning?

The smell of stove top coffee being made! Also, my passion for educating people on food and nutrition of course!

What have you learnt by working as a dietitian in various settings that you think you can bring to one-on-one consultations?

I can bring in-depth knowledge and experience, as well as the persistence needed to help each patient reach their goal.

What is your favourite way to relax?

Reading whilst enjoying a cup of tea!

What are your own health goals and how do you balance this with work and other responsibilities?

To cook with a variety of different seasonal foods daily, and to cook creatively! This keeps me happy and stimulated and is also a stress relief. Except when the recipe doesn’t turn out……

What is the best aspect of your job?

the opportunity to have a two-way conversation with patients about food and lifestyle. Food consumption can be very emotional so I enjoy finding out each person’s journey and continuing to help them. Knowledge is power and I love educating each person about how to have a better relationship with food.
